MIKE RYMER (writer/director)

Mike brings grass roots appreciation of the production industries to his break-through work. He was a post-production runner in Soho, TV runner on productions for Channel 4 and the BBC, a fixer for international crews, and development runner at Rennaisance Films where he wrote coverage for the likes of Werner Herzog's Rescue Dawn.

In Film Production, he worked through the camera and AD departments, most notably as 3rd Assistant Director for Peter Greenaway on Venice Film Festival Golden Lion Nominee Nightwatching. With a Masters Distinction in Film from Newport Film School, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Script Development from The National Film and Television School, he marries deft production skills with an acute understanding of visual language.

When released to the festival circuit in the summer of 2007, his debut short film (the ambitious 35mm drama 'SICK') was quickly endorsed by Samaritans who called it 'a compelling and moving work'. Film London hailed it 'a subtle yet forceful story, sensitively portrayed', and The Guardian praised it for breaking the silence on mental health.

The film won a clutch of International awards from festival selections across 25 countries. It has been the subject of Mental Health events in Portugal, Bosnia, Sarajevo, Ireland, Nova Scotia and Los Angeles, used for education across Europe, and released twice on DVD (BFI Filmstore/ Film 4), with world sales by Dazzle Films.
